Head of PN and Sterile Compounding Unit
Ahmed Abo-Bakr Mahmoud is the Head of Parenteral Nutrition and Sterile Compounding Unit at Maternity Hospital in Kuwait, a 500+ bed tertiary care hospital. The TPN Unit of Maternity Hospital has an industrial scale like-production of PN bags, more than 160 bags per day, in addition to the IV preparations. Moreover, it serves as PN outsourcing to some hospitals in Kuwait, and has been a training center for the undergraduates and fresh pharmacists of Kuwait for many years.
Ahmed graduated from Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University in 2003, after which he obtained a Diploma of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, and another Diploma of Bioinformatics. He is also a Board Certified Nutrition Support Pharmacist since 2014.
Ahmed’s achievements included establishing and maintaining the quality of the current TPN Unit of Maternity Hospital, setting up the first USP <797> compliant Sterile Compounding Unit in Kuwait, and researching Calcium-phosphate compatibility in TPN solutions. Ahmed had given more than 100 presentations and lectures in the field of Parenteral Nutrition and Sterile Compounding, and he is an adjunct lecturer at Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Kuwait University since 2016.
Ahmed is an IVPNeer who is passionate about conveying knowledge to other students and peers. He is an item writer for the new Board of Sterile Compounding by BPS, and his areas of interest include Clinical Nutrition in Newborn, PN and IV admixture automation, Clean Rooms establishing, and Sterile Compounding at low setting hospitals.
